On August 9th, 2009 my Dad and I went to scout area 22 for his 2009 Nevada muzzleloader hunt. As luck would have it, the first two bucks that we spotted were a large two-point and this whopper! We watched these two bucks until August 22nd, when a short break to hunt antelope interfered. After we returned we immediately found the big buck and his two-point friend in the same area that we had left...

In Utah, if a youth draws a rifle deer tag, it is valid for all three of the hunts; archery, muzzleloader, and rifle. So you can imagine my excitement level when I found out that I had drawn a rifle tag this year! I could not wait for the hunts to start!
My dad thought it would be best if started our scouting just prior to the muzzleloader season so, that’s what we did. A couple weeks...

Four days prior to September 1st, I found myself once again leaving central California to make my way to Monticello, Utah. As always, I had purchased a trophy buck tag to hunt with my great friend, Kurt Lewis. I knew luck was going to be on my side as my buddy, Brady Dupke, showed up to help me find a big buck. Actually, we were not looking for any buck, but a huge typical that was videoed and...

Our deer hunting grounds might seem more like sheep or goat country to most hunters. Near vertical slopes covered in loose shale, thick oak, and reclusive pine trees, offer a great home to the deer that dwell here. But, the truth be told, that nasty stuff is just what we like; it’s what allows the bucks found here to reach a mature age and with that, comes the chance for an incredible set of...

Over the years, I’ve hunted a number of different species that the West has to offer, but the elusive mule deer has always held a special place in my heart. Growing up on the east coast, my youthful deer hunting consisted of chasing strictly whitetails…and, the truth be told, I loved it! However, every once in a while the pages of Outdoor Life and Field & Stream would showcase some lucky...

In 1996, I spent a total of 17 days scouting and hunting the Arizona Strip. During that time I glassed up one shooter buck, late one evening at the distance of a mile. Unfortunately, he was not seen again and while I went home with an unpunched tag, I fell in love with the area and the possibility of finding a monster buck around the next corner. Another good turn of events that year was that I...

I was speechless as I peered though my binoculars at the buck. At that exact moment, words couldn’t describe what I thought about the narrow but massive non-typical (nick-named Centerfold) as Brady and I sat there admiring him. His words describing the buck’s life seemed distant and faded, as I began to recreate just how I got here.
Since I began hunting mule deer with...

While most hunters would agree that it is one thing to become a successful mule deer hunter, only a few can testify to the fact that everything changes entirely once you harvest a truly giant mule deer. At the exact point that you lay your hands on the antlers of your dreams, there is no going back; and for the rest of your life, you will spend an absurd amount of time, energy, and money while...

Webster defines “fate” as: “That principle by which things are supposed to come to be, or that which is destined or decreed.” Therefore, I believe it could be nothing but fate, that drove the events leading up to the day that I took a fantastic Nevada muley.
Early in the year, I was excited to learn that I had drawn a great Nevada deer tag with Keith Montes, co-owner of Nevada High...

The “Keene” BuckFor years I have always wanted to harvest a nice mule deer. My husband, Gary, is a taxidermist, and together we own a retail store on the Wind River Indian Reservation. He is often told many stories of a “big one” being seen somewhere so with some possible information stuck in our mind, I put my name in for a late season trophy deer tag. If unsuccessful my name would go into...
